Hercolyn D and DW – A pair of resins from natural sustainable sources

Throughout the ages, resins have been widely used in incense and perfumery for their medicinal and highly-fragrant properties. From agarwood and balsams, to myrrh and frankincense.

Most are commercially produced from trees by making a minor incision into the bark, letting the sap pour out and allowing the tree to repair itself with excess resin. Pine trees in particular are one of the most valuable resources of terpenes, where liquid resins Hercolyn D and Hercolyn DW are extracted from.

Both are implemented into a variety of applications and are especially useful as a fixative for fragrance compounds and solvents for candles. However, there are subtle differences in the way they are obtained.

Extraction

Hercolyn D is obtained from tapping live trees then followed by removing the turpentine, whilst Hercolyn DW is obtained from tree stumps using a solvent extraction method and rosin refining process – a product exclusive to Pinova.

Unique Properties

Both are light amber in colour with a low/neutral odour and vapour pressure, making them ideal as fragrance fixatives to retard evaporation and promote the long-lasting aroma of perfumes.

Plus, as a result of their solubility and compatibility ranges, they can be added in end formulations for applications such as soaps, detergents, pot-pourri, creams/lotions, shampoos, insect repellents, and candles.

They also function as a resin, plasticiser, or diluent (in some instances, as all three) for products such as lacquers, inks and floor tiles.

Pinova: Only producer of wood resin

Pinova, is a subsidiary company of DRT based in Georgia, USA who are dedicated to sustainability, innovation, enduring quality, and customer service. They manufacture a range of turpentine and rosin based products, including Hercolyn D and DW.

By using less than 25% of the annual stump wood reserves, Pinova ensure a sustainable wood rosin supply chain for the future.
