COVID-19 – The fragrance industry and three perfume ingredients

As distributors, suppliers and sourcing agents of high-quality aroma chemicals, essential oils, and fragrant ingredients, we have been observing the impact COVID-19 has had on the fragrance industry.

According to International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF) the company has experienced a significant spike in consumer demand for ingredients used in packaged food, beverage, hygiene and disinfection categories which represented 85% of its total business in 2019. However, disruptions in consumer access have created weaknesses in fine fragrance and cosmetic additives.

With the majority of luxury fragrance retail outlets closed in an effort to limit the spread of Covid-19 in public spaces, a lot of key natural ingredients are left un-harvested – causing fine fragrance and cosmetic sales to decimate, aromatherapists being unable to operate and an increase in online sales.

We have also noticed a drop in scented candle and diffuser sales too. But as many brands are looking to re-open their stores in June, the fragrance industry and other related sectors are likely to continue supplying in these categories – several smaller as well as larger blending operations have converted to sanitiser production in response.

In last few months, Zanos have supplied key aroma ingredients to customers in personal care manufacturing including Hexyl Salicylate, Amyl Salicylate, and Delta Damascone.

Hexyl Salicylate

A colourless and transparent oil, this is an unusual material which combines balsamic, herbaceous elements with a floral hint. It is also especially useful as a blending agent, creating notes in perfumes and can be used in soaps and detergents.

Amyl Salicylate

A versatile and low-costing perfume ingredient, it possesses a sweet and light floral odour that can be used in most fragrance types as another blender, such as orchid and carnation. The chemical is also frequently used in shampoo and bath products.

Delta Damascone

Our final perfume ingredient is a member of the rose ketone family and its odour is naturally fruity and woody given its unique floral effects – making it ideal for fabric care products.

Zanos Ltd. aims to fulfil all contracts to our customers to the highest standards. For orders of any of the above products, or other aroma chemicals, please do get in touch with our sales team. Email webenquiries@zanos.co.uk – we’ll be happy to help.
