Amyris Oil – an affordable “sandalwood” for perfumers

Romantic thoughts are on our mind in the month of February and what better ingredient to discuss than Amyris Oil since its rich, warm woody aroma complements masculine blends in perfumery and is reputed to act as an aphrodisiac.

More commonly known as West Indian Sandalwood, Amyris Oil can be used as a cheaper alternative to sandalwood.   The bark of the Amyris balsamifera L. tree in Haiti is steam-distilled to extract this alternative essential oil whose property is different from the popular sandalwood yet does the job.   Also know as “candle wood,” the natives of Haiti would burn the wood to light their way due to its high resin content.

Reminiscent of benzoin due to its underlying vanilla note, this woody and cedar-like essential oil is said to be one of oldest aromatic materials used in perfumery – as far back as the last 4,000 years!   Aside from fine fragrances, warm and gentle Amyris Oil is used extensively as a soap perfume as it blends well with oils such as lavandin oil, coumarin, citronella oils and oakmoss products.

And let’s not overlook its beneficial properties when caring for your skin.  Thanks to its high content of sesquiterpenols, Amyris is a key ingredient in many anti-aging skin care products as it is said to delay the onset of fine lines, wrinkles and ages spots.  A drop or two of this essential oil can be added to a daily cleanser and moisturizer to apply directly to skin to help hydrate and replenish it.

Breathing in this uplifting scent helps boost mental cognition and improves one’s concentration and focus.  It also contains antiseptic and decongestant proprieties and helps calm the mind.

Zanos sources Amyris Oil and other 100% natural and organic ingredients from our trusted suppliers.  We have also been trading in competitively-priced aroma chemicals for nearly 20 years.
