IFEAT – the International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades – held its 2018 conference in Cartagena, Colombia, on September 9th-13th, as the aroma ingredients industry converged on one of the biggest events in its annual calendar.
Attendance at IFEAT 2018 is so strong that the conference rarely shows up on social media timelines and hashtag streams, mainly because the industry’s major representatives are all already there in person, including Zanos founder and company director Julian Sarkar.
A record-number of attendees yet again, 1,200 participants gathered representing producers, end-users and traders. They discussed the latest updates on the aroma ingredients industry, essential oils, flavour and fragrance ingredients, and what’s in the pipeline for the years to come.
This year’s event had a continental theme, but not continental Europe – rather, the various sessions, speeches and seminars centred around the topic of ‘Las Americas’, and the regional markets of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
Delegates learned of some of the developments in legislation and regulations in those areas, as well as across the global flavour and fragrance ingredients sector.
It was also an opportunity for IFEAT themselves to share some updates on their latest work, including their support for study tours and educational programmes in flavour ingredients and perfumery, as the industry helps to train the next generation of aroma ingredient experts.
IFEAT 2018 also looked to the future, as is traditional at the annual conference, as it makes sense for delegates to capitalise on their time at the industry’s largest networking event by making plans and future forecasts.
Many took part in presentations, discussed current and future aroma ingredients industry demands, and shared some of the details of their latest product updates. Flavour and fragrance study workshops were also scheduled. The week’s activities concluded with a formal dinner attended by 900 people in informal attire due to the relaxed beach location.
With the Far East reasserting its role as a source of fragrance and flavour ingredients, just as it has been for many generations, it was announced that the location of IFEAT 2019 will take place in Bali – and we at Zanos are already looking forward to making the trip to meet once again with suppliers, customers, partners and colleagues within the aroma industry from all over the world.
